Removing Computer Science from the Technology Document Feedback

From ACSEWiki

This is the first of a number of questions that will appear in the discussion group. ACSE will use information from the discussions and opinions that follow to help determine an association reposnse. There will be a number of questions over the next four weeks, so if you respond to any particular question, please stay on that topic. If there are any issues not included in this list of questions that should be discussed, please feel free to post your own questions to the discussion group.

If you choose to respond you are asked to provide a numerical rating of your reaction to the question where 2 means strongly agree, 1 means agree, 0 neutral, -1 disagree, -2 strongly disagree. Providing the number will help in summarizing the data. As well as this feedback, where you think there is a problem in the curriculum document, offer suggestions for improvements.

This is the first question: It is proposed in the Curriuclum Reform Process that Computer and Information Science document be removed from the Technology document and placed in its own document. Agree or disagree?

For clarification, under the reform process it has been suggested that Computer and Information Science be removed and placed in a separate Computer Studies document. Computer Engineering would remain in the Technology document. Do you agree or disagree and what are your thoughts?

Feedback

There were two main themes expressed in the responses. A number of people who responded with -1 or -2 indicated that the two areas of CS should stay together and that this was more important than the document that housed them. There were also opinions that funding for CS was better when the courses were in the CS document and that students taking CS may think about taking other Tech courses.

There were two responses that gave scores of both +2 and -2. +2 for moving Computer and Information Scienced to a new document but -2 for leaving Computer Engineering behind. They suggested as others that the two areas should move together to a new document.

The plus 2 responses tened to focus on the unique nature of Computer and Information Science, that it would be better to house it in its own document. Some of these responses also indicated that the two areas shou, stay together. The Wikipedia definition of Computer Science was used to focus these thoughts.

In many ways the feedback was indicative of the varied ways the current curriculum and placing of Computer Engineering has taken place across the province. A common thought through the responses was people try to do what they thought was best for the students.

By the numbers, the average response on the -2,-1,0,1,2 scale was just below 0.
